Kids' Artistic Choices at Summer Camp

Summer camp offers a bounty of opportunities for kids to let their creative spirits soar. Along with days of fun-filled waterfront activities, wilderness explorations and campfires, youngsters at sleepaway camp can try out all things artsy from theatrical performances to woodworking, painting and ceramics. Campers can choose to concentrate on a current passion for painting or explore a wide variety of new creative interests. Many camps celebrate these summer masterpieces at an end of camp art show.

Crafts
Pretty much every summer camp has a crafts component, with programs exploring everything from tie-dye shirt creations to watercolor painting and papier-mâché collages. Lots of camp crafts become treasured memorabilia of sunny days with camp pals, and you'll find God's eyes, friendship bracelets, t-shirts and picture frames galore among December's holiday gifts. Kids also get a chance to hone drawing and painting skills, often featuring nature themes, whether painted landscapes of the surrounding wilderness or clever mixed-media collages incorporating everything from feathers to ferns. Like many camp activities, crafts let kids explore new activities, frequently uncovering talents and passions they never knew they had. Often, campers can choose their own elective activities, enabling them to concentrate on any art activity that interests them.
Ceramics
What could be more fun than playing with clay along with a bunch of camp pals? Many summer camps not only get kids creating by hand with clay and papier-mâché, but also introduce them to the wonderful world of a full ceramics studio, complete with potter' s wheels and ovens for completing their cool creations. Campers learn pinch, coil, slab and throw methods of working with clay. Best of all, they can experience the joy of throwing a pot, bowl or cylinder and then baking, painting and glazing the finished item. You can expect to see anything from colorful ceramic fish to shiny vases and carefully glazed bowls coming home with your excited camper at summer's end.
Woodworking
Starting with the basics of hammering a nail and progressing to more advanced skills involving power equipment from saws to drills, summer camp woodworking programs not only give kids a super artistic outlet, but also provide some very practical lifelong skills. The fun of designing and building a mini Ping Pong table from start to finish can ignite an interest in design and construction that can turn into a long-standing hobby or even career. Both boys and girls can benefit from learning to wield common tools skillfully and safely, and all love the satisfaction of showing off a table or chess set they made themselves from start to finish.
Music and Theater
In addition to the visual arts, many summer camps offer lots of lively options for music and theater activities. A Capella groups, guitar lessons and camp bands give kids a chance to show off new skills and talents in a supportive, non-threatening environment, while plays and campfire skits are super ways to learn to work as a team toward the common goal of a great performance. Theatrical teams need script writers, set builders and props managers. So, even the shyest camper can thrive within the camaraderie and cooperative spirit of helping pull together an awesome skit or play.
